Joonas Mattila

Software Engineer, Junior

Joonas Mattila

My career path from an intern to a full-time junior developer at Symbio in such a short amount of time has been a dream come true. I work as a junior SW engineer at the Oulu office. I found my passion for information technology when I was performing my military service. I participated in the defense forces leadership training and became a squad leader for a signal squad.  Following that, I started studying information technology at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

My Symbio journey started as part of my studies when I was looking for a place to do my school internship. Symbio, among many other local companies, visited our school to present their company and project offerings for students. I found Symbio’s business exciting and the projects intriguing, and I joined the team as an intern in January 2019. I completed all the internship work that my studies required and continued working throughout the summer as a junior developer. I also did my bachelor’s thesis in cooperation with Symbio. After my graduation this year, I was offered a full-time job as a junior developer, which I took.

By now, I have been part of two projects in the health and medical tech industries.  The technologies I use are varying between projects, which I find enjoyable as I drive for learning and solving challenges. Mostly I have programmed by using modern C++ and C# thus far. I have also used Python and done some scripting for Windows (Batch) and Linux (Shell). Other worth mentioning are Docker, Git, and different embedded development platforms such as Movesense. Currently, I want to learn more about C# and application development for Windows. In the early stage of my career, I want to try out all sorts of technologies to find the ones that I genuinely enjoy using the most.

For a recently graduated engineer, things couldn’t have gone any better. My managers and colleagues have been supportive and helped me to rise to the challenge.  I have felt appreciated for my work and input. The primary skills that have helped me succeed in this role are persistence, ability to learn with speed, and social skills. There is no better feeling than finding a way to fix a complex bug or solving a tricky issue. Those moments of success keep me going and motivate me in moving forward.
